Scottish Ale

The Scottish Ale, sometimes seen with a "Schilling" mention, is a pale copper to very dark brown colored, malt-focused, generally caramelly beer with perhaps a few esters and occasionally a butterscotch aftertaste with hops only to balance and support the malt. The malt character can range from dry and grainy to rich, toasty, and caramelly, but is never roasty. Some American versions will have a subtle peat smoke character. The Scottish Ales were traditionnally termed Light, Heavy and Export which cover the spectrum of costs from around 60/- to 90/- and were simply dark, malt-focused ales that were parti-gyled to different strengths, and represented an adaptation of English pale ales but with reduced strengths, hopping rates and darker colors. Similar character to a Wee Heavy, but much smaller.
